Getting rid of scratches in a hardwood floor
Beautiful hardwood floors are every homeowner’s dream. Ideally, floors will be smooth, clean and bright with the beautiful grain of the wood on display. Unfortunately, after years of wear, your floor could be scratched, dented or lacklustre. Not to worry though - there are several options to spruce up your floor.
Use a walnut
You may have heard of the old trick of rubbing a walnut on scratches in wood… and it actually works! Get a ready-to-eat walnut, rub it up and down the scratch and then polish it with a soft cloth. Your scratch will disappear like magic!
Buffing, polishing and waxing
Unfortunately the walnut trick won't work for larger scratches or big patches. Buffing, polishing and waxing are all options you have to get your hardwood floor looking great again. Waxing produces a nice soft finish whilst bringing out the natural colours and grain of the timber. Polishing is a great way to freshen up your floors, while buffing adds a great shine.
Sanding
Sanding is for those who want a hard-core wood floor repair. It will leave your floor looking brand new! With expert sanding machinery, coarse-grade sandpaper is first used to remove the old finish, ready for a brand new look. It will take away any dents and pits in the wood surface. Then medium-grade sandpaper will prepare the surface. Finally, a fine-textured sandpaper will give your floor that smooth feel you desire. It will take away even the tiniest imperfections and any scratches in your hardwood floor will be gone!
However you’ll need to watch out - if you’re undertaking anything trickier than the old walnut trick, you may want to consider getting in a professional to prevent the risk of damage to your hardwood floors. We’ve seen horrible scratches where someone has tried to sand across the grain of the wood. This is especially bad if you’re considering staining your floor, as the tiny imperfections that would normally disappear under a clear coat of varnish are highlighted for the world to see when stained.
The Floor Sanding Co will additionally provide you with a dust-free service. Modern technology allows sanding with virtually no dust left behind, making it safer for you and your family when the job is done.
